The Halloween story

Halloween is an ancient festival that has existed for centuries. What began as a pagan ritual has now become a huge  day of costumes, spectacular spooky events, and tick-or-treating.

In Mexico, Halloween is celebrated as the Day of the Dead, a celebration of those who have passed on, while other countries celebrate similar festivals to remember and recognize their deceased.

When is Halloween?

Halloween is on October 31st, each year. It is the day before All Saint’s Day (November 1st) and was traditionally known as ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, later evolving to ‘Halloween’.

Halloween 2022 falls on a Monday.

What is Halloween?

Halloween dates back to an ancient Celtic festival called ‘Samhain’ which traditionally marked the end of summer, the harvest, and the start of winter. Celtic Pagans believed that on this day, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred, hence the focus of ghosts and ghouls!

When Christianity began to spread across England, it is thought that the Church established All Soul’s Day to incorporate the Celtic tradition, with people dressing up and parading through towns.

Eventually, the celebrations spread to America, and the American version of Halloween emerged, with a night of public events to celebrate the harvest and people sharing stories of legends, fortune, and mythic tales.

Over the years, Halloween has become a huge event, monopolising on the ‘spookier’ side. Many of the modern day activities stem from ancient practices, such as the costumes of the Celts and the ghost stories. The custom of ‘Trick or Treat’ also comes from an early American tradition of going door to door asking for food or money.

Halloween Fundraisers for everyone

As Halloween is such a big and elaborate event in the US, it would be crazy not to take advantage of it to throw a great Halloween fundraiser – not least because there are so many fun Halloween activities you can do!

That said, spooky is not everyone’s cup of tea. But don’t worry! If your organization or age group aren’t into scary, then there are still plenty of fun activities you can do for a Halloween fundraiser, such as a movie night, restaurant fundraiser, or Jack-o-Lantern carving competition!

As with all the best fundraisers, a Halloween fundraiser should be something that is relatively easy to organize, low budget, and fun to do! When it comes to choosing your fundraiser, consider who will be taking part. A Halloween fundraiser for school kids should be suitable for younger ages – think scary but not too scary, while a college Halloween fundraiser might involve the super-scary movies or even a haunted house!

The fundraising ideas for Halloween are numerous, so we’ve listed our top ideas to get you started with your event!

Top Halloween fundraiser ideas

Here are our top Halloween fundraiser ideas for kids, college students, clubs and groups.

Halloween Party

A Halloween Party is a great Halloween fundraiser that can incorporate a lot of the fun Halloween traditions. It’s also one of the best Halloween school fundraiser ideas because it can easily be tailored to different age groups.

Throw a Halloween party in the school hall, community centre, or sorority or fraternity house and tell everyone to dress up in their best costume. You could add a theme, such as ‘Zombie Halloween’, and make sure to give out prizes for the best dressed! Tickets will raise funds for your cause.

Pumpkin Carving Competition

Pumpkin Carving is a good Halloween fundraiser for school kids, but everyone enjoys letting their creative skills show! Advertise your competition across the school, club, or Campus. Entrants pay an entry fee and must submit their finished Jack-o-Lantern for judging by a certain day and time. You can award prizes in categories, such as ‘Spookiest Pumpkin’, ‘Most Original’, or ‘Best Carving’.

If pumpkin carving is too challenging for younger kids, you could convert this event into a Halloween drawing competition on the same basis.

Halloween Restaurant Fundraiser

A restaurant fundraiser is always a great community event, and it works really well as a Halloween fundraiser if you would like to organize an event but aren’t so big on the spooky-side. There are restaurants across the country where you can hold a restaurant fundraiser and a percentage of all sales will be donated back to your cause for orders made through your event.

Of course, you can make your restaurant fundraiser all about Halloween by encouraging people to dress up or hosting it at a place that offers Halloween specials, like the famous ‘Krispy Skremes’!

A movie night is a very easy event to organize and perfect for a Halloween fundraiser. Invite your friends and club members for a Halloween movie night and indulge in the best of the season’s sweet snacks – popcorn, toffee apples, and lots of candy.

Everyone pays for a ticket, and you can choose which movie you go for, scary or not. A movie night also works well as a virtual fundraiser should you prefer that option.
